PKU patients can lead a normal life with Prekulab's nutritional treatment

In August 2003, PreKUlab obtained international recognition of the product PreKUnil.

 

When taking PreKUnil a PKU-patient may follow a far more liberal dietary strategy and hence achieve a far better quality of life.

In all other aspects, the principles of the treatment remain simple, meaning the consumption of phenylalanine (phe) is restricted. Since phe is found in all proteins, the most natural protein is substituted by PreKUnil that contains all other amino acids. Avonil comes as a tablet and a powder and is administered together with PreKUnil powder along with as low-protein a diet as possible. Mix the powders with water and drink the mixture with the meals. In Denmark, the expenses for Avonil and PreKUnil are covered by the State.

It should be noted that the patients must continue to follow a dietary strategy.



The dietary strategies are individual and based on the child's phenylalanine tolerance, its age, weight and height and other factors. As the child grows up blood samples are taken on a regular basis to determine whether to alter the dietary strategy.


If the treatment follows along with the recommended phe-levels there will be no difference between the development of children with classic and mild PKU.

A child suffering from PKU needs follow-up care by a medical unit specialising in PKU, in Denmark the J.F. Kennedy Institute.

Until a few years ago, there was a widely held international belief that the treatment could stop when an individual reached the age of adulthood; however, stopping the treatment has been found in some cases (but not all) to lead to a drop in the intellectual capacity, learning disabilities, and behavioural changes. It is not possible to safely determine which patients cannot stop the treatment. Consequently, we recommend that the treatment should be for life.
