Being a teenager with PKU can be hard. Laura Momme, now 29, from Aarhus, Denmark, had a particularly difficult time.
“I was on a strict kids diet, and I was sick of it.

An easier diet plan

Laura developed anorexia in her mid-teens and stopped eating from one day to the next. Her dietician suggested PreKUnil tablets as a solution that would allow her to have a more liberal diet, and allow her to take just 36 tablets a day, split across three meals.

“One of the issues was my strict diet. I hated everything about it – the powder, weighing the food, the lists of what I could and couldn't eat. PreKUnil was a great solution for me.” she said.

It’s not unusual to struggle with guilt around food, especially when you are a PKU patient. The PreKUnil tablets allowed her to eat a much more regular diet, so she could eat burgers with her friends without a guilty conscience. The freedom to eat what she wants to, most of the time, allows Laura to eat a diet with a lot of fish and chicken in it, plus healthy (and protein-rich) skyr every morning.

Taking control

“Now I feel like I’m in control of my PKU, not the other way around,” she said. “I sometimes even forget I have it! All patients are different, and this solution doesn’t work for everyone, but it’s right for me, and I feel really happy and lucky to be on these pills.”

Laura has been highly active in the PKU community, planning events for Denmark's young PKU organization (Unge med PKU) when she was younger. She occasionally still attends PKU conferences across Europe, and meets young people on strict diets who are amazed that she can follow such a liberal diet.

Freedom to live a normal life

“I notice in some young European patients, there is a fear around trying something new, or what might be seen as experimenting. But I always say that these products have been clinically proven to work and you can always go back to your previous solution if it isn’t for you! I have tried my old product three times over the last twelve years to see if there is a difference in how I feel. The only difference I see is that I have a much more restricted diet with my previous powder, and much more freedom with PreKUnil. I think it’s worth a try!”

Helping other people has been a key focus to Laura’s life so far. She has spent the past few years as an entrepreneur, especially focused on projects in the sustainability sector, and is now training to be a nurse.

“The best thing is that PreKUnil gives me the freedom to live a normal life, and a calmness within myself”, she said.
