Avonil is available as an odour and flavourless powder, to be mixed with water or juice. It must be supplemented with a low protein diet. When patients follow a special low protein diet and take Avonil, all the essential amino acids except Phe are put back into their diet. Avonil must be taken every day with a meal.
Avonil powder contains low sugar content, reducing the risk of contributing to being overweight or obese. The powder should be divided into three or more doses to take throughout the day with food.
For children and adults, including maternal PKU. Suitability must be determined by a specialist doctor or dietician.
The recommended dosage depends on lean body mass, physical activity and the ability to metabolise natural protein. A metabolic doctor or clinical dietician should calculate the correct daily dosage. For full details, download the data sheet.
